Fools and Their Money: A Seasonal Shopping Guide

“A fool and his money are soon parted” is a saying often attributed to Thomas Tusser, an English poet and farmer, who first wrote a version of it in his 1573 book Five Hundreth Pointes of Good Husbandrie. If only he could have envisioned today’s internet. AI will test your ability this year to differentiate the fake from the real more than ever.

As we scour the internet for bargains, hard-to-find items, and the best possible shipping terms, charities are making their annual push for donations, including major online solicitation campaigns. Scammers of all sizes are also using all sorts of AI tools to get between you and the companies you want to buy from or donate to.

Succumbing to a scam doesn’t make you a fool; the scammers and their tools are really, really good. AI helps them create exceptionally good graphic and video deep fakes. It helps them replicate flawless logos and improve their grammar, spelling, and syntax, all of which used to be dead giveaways of a scam.

But it would be foolhardy not to raise your antennae and harden your common sense with renewed vigilance. The cardinal rule remains the same: If something looks too good to be true, something is likely wrong.

Let’s look at some things that should raise a red flag:

  • Links: Whether in an email or especially on a website popup, don’t click on a link from a person or entity you don’t know or can’t verify. It’s the quickest way to allow a bad actor to plant malicious code that can compromise your data and that of anyone in your contact list.
  • Emails from Businesses, Charities or People You Don’t Recognize: The sender’s name may look legitimate, but you can hover your mouse over the sender’s name and see the real email address. If you’re not sure about anything you see, you have two options:
    • Delete the email.
    • Open a new browser window and type in the name of the business or charity as you know it to be. You should be able to find a phone number to call to verify if it’s from a legitimate organization.
  • Unsolicited Text Messages: This is another form of phishing known as smishing. Treat them the same as an email.

Be careful of really good prices when shopping for all products and services. Prices that are too good to be true may be outright fraudulent or carry terms and conditions that are extremely unfavorable to you. Check closely to make sure a product or even an airline ticket or hotel room is not offered by a gray-market or third-party provider. Read the terms and conditions and look for authentic user reviews. Again, if something looks funny, it should raise a red flag.

No matter what you’re looking to do online, it’s more important than ever to use two-factor authentication (2FA) for all the websites you can. While a code sent to your computer or phone is better than nothing, more advanced forms of 2FA, such as authenticator apps or biometrics, rely more on information stored on a specific device, making them more secure.

Email in Disguise

The trend of getting voicemail messages through email is opening new doors for hackers to enter computer systems. Scammers are using email with spoofed addresses to hack into business operations, such as wiring money. Today’s office environment provides a perfect setup for a hacker: You hit people when they’re juggling multiple tasks, and you come across as a colleague or customer in an expected environment. We have two examples from our client experiences that show how easy it is for a problem to go undetected. And we have some tips to strengthen your security.

The problem with the voicemails happened while we were on vacation in Hawaii, which has a six-hour time difference with New Jersey. Our client reported getting emails about missed calls – which could have been generated by their voicemail/email system. It’s a growing trend to handle voicemails because phone and email run on the same networks, and sometimes it’s more effective for an employee to click a link and return the call while the message is on the screen.

And that’s how this problem showed up. Every time our client clicked on the link, nothing happened. When we got back from vacation, our first job was to install a new computer for the client. Everything went as planned, but then we got a call that the client only had 11 emails in the system. To make a long story short, it took all day to find all of the emails in a “recovery for deleted emails” folder and restore them – all 75,000 of them. The time was lengthened because we needed to sort them to cull the voice-mail files.

We changed the password immediately to cover the possibility the computer may have been hacked. After that was done, we got a call that our client couldn’t click to return numbers left in voicemails. I left a voicemail, and we were able to get a return call.

The likely issue is that someone from the outside spoofed a known and trusted phone number. The lesson here is that if it happens a second time, don’t click the link. While you may not know if you were hacked or fooled by some malware, you should know that something is wrong and needs attention. The earlier you let us know about it, the sooner we can work with you to mitigate the problem and minimize damage.

A second incident could have been catastrophic. Again, we awoke to find several urgent emails from a client that regularly wires large sums of money to entities worldwide. The incident occurred July 1, when they were preparing to wire nearly $100,000 to an entity. The entity to which they were wiring the money said they hadn’t received their wire in April. That raised alarms. We learned that the amount of money in both transfers was consistent, and the entity to which the money was to be wired could change names from time to time. Everything with the April and July transfers seemed to be within the realm of normal operations.

While we couldn’t get the April money back (the client had insurance to cover it), they were able to halt the July transfer. At the same time, we worked with them to develop new policies to help double-check money-wiring instructions and monitor the process better.

Among the key takeaways from these incidents, you should always be on guard because hackers and cyberthieves are getting much, much better at disguising their identities. When it comes to VOIP and cellular voicemails, it becomes way too easy to click on a number to return a call. That click could direct you to a link that installs some kind of malware. You can write down the phone number and initiate a phone call – much in the same way you can open a browser and go to a website instead of clicking on a suspicious link. In a related matter, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is about to force telephone carriers to verify the phone number location of incoming calls. This should reduce – at least for now – phone number spoofing.

Also, be vigilant about looking for anything that looks like a change in your operations or the entities you deal with. Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call somebody to verify instructions.

Following the Money Conversations

Money is the only reason somebody steals information. Some 70 percent of the emails that lead to information theft are related to either financial institutions, businesses or something that mentions money in the subject line. Another 20 percent are related to espionage, and 5 percent are related to employee grudges. In most cases, curiosity kills your security.

Phishing expeditions are still one of the most effective ways for hackers to get into a computer system, and that’s because people have insatiable curiosity, especially when it comes to money. We’ve told you time and time again to be very careful about the links you click on from within an email. It is so easy for a hacker to mimic the logo of any bank or financial institution and to create an email address that can be close enough to looking real that you won’t notice it’s a fake in your haste to check out a great offer or respond to a dire warning.

So, as we’ve mentioned ad nausea, your curiosity could open the door to a Trojan horse virus that will enable someone to get into your computer. And once they do that, they can insert themselves into your financial conversations. To whom are you talking about money? Is it your financial advisor? Is it an attorney or a CPA? Is it your bank, credit card company or several merchants? They can identify every single one of them just by looking at your email. After all, you keep thousands of them in your Outlook application or on a website – which they can easily find once they get into your computer.

How will they put your email conversations to work for them? Well, let’s see. There’s your financial advisor, who’s been talking to you about your 401(k). Hmm. That’s good. Bet you have the password for that account stored on your computer. That makes it easy.

But wait, what if you “forgot” your password. The hacker can go to the website with your 401(k) and use your email address to reset the password. If that security is lax – say, for example, there’s no two-factor authentication – the hacker can have your email address routed to his, and now he’s in your account and can clean it out.

Of course, that could be just part of his haul. He knows who your financial advisor is, and maybe their system isn’t 100 percent locked down. You can imagine the fallout.

What if you’re involved in a large business transaction, such as buying a business or even a house? Your attorney may be dealing with a financial institution or two – even through another attorney. Again, a hacker can insert himself in a conversation with any party connected to the money, spoofing your email address or that of anyone involved. And once the hacker is into that next system, it opens more doors.

Just to add to your “watch list” when checking your email, also be wary of somebody sending you updated files that you are not expecting. We have a client who clicked on a PDF and wound up with an infected computer. Fortunately, it caused a major inconvenience more than anything else. Because all of the client’s files were backed up offsite, we had to wipe the computer clean and then find the infected files to delete from the backup. We were able to fully restore everything after that, but it took 18 hours.

So, let’s recap the steps you need to take:

  • Look before you click. Do I get this kind of email message from this sender on a regular basis? Is this an offer that’s too good to be true? Is there anything that looks just the least bit out of the ordinary – even if it’s from a sender I know and trust? Remember, you can always access the sender’s website from your Internet browser instead of the email, or you can pick up the telephone and call a company or a person.
  • If something looks odd even before you open the email, just delete it. I am amazed at how many people just let something suspicious just sit there.
  • Don’t conduct financial business or visit passworded sites while on a public Wi-Fi network. Non-secured networks can be viewed by anyone from anywhere.
  • Be very careful with flash drives. Someone can use one to invade your computer. If you are running a good anti-virus or anti-malware program, it should intercept any external device and give you the option to scan it.
  • Keep your anti-virus and anti-malware software up to date. And make sure they’re both running.

Two More Tips to Protect Your Money

  1. When you travel by air, don’t just throw your boarding pass in the first trash bin you find in the terminal. The barcode on the pass has a wealth of information, including your frequent flyer account information – and any other personal information in that database – and your itinerary, which can let somebody know how far away from home you are and how long you will be away. If you can’t shred it, tear it into pieces that also separate the barcode and throw them into different trash bins.
  2. Check all of your financial accounts frequently, especially with business bank accounts. When you have a lot of money coming in and going out electronically, that means a lot bank treasury departments are accessing your account. If you monitor the accounts regularly, you have a much better chance of catching fraudulent activity.
